Silco is a man who is a shadow, but all shadows come from a source of light. As I knelt down for the animal he called a hyena, I saw the way he looked at me and I let him. He entertained my whim and allowed me solace in something pure, but the world we're in is not pure, and this man has the eyes of someone who knows.
I remind myself no dog is like the one who greeted me. I have to think of him as the same.

We went to the zoo. I have never seen an animal behind glass before, but where else will they go? Would the house be angry if I set them free? I contemplated this as Lux stared into the eyes of an owl, its beak clicking in what I can assume was curiosity. Birds are smart. I tell Lux this, of how they wait for the earth to soften from the rain to eat the worms. She smiles and I smile at her. She's polite. From a world I do not know, but that doesn't matter to her. We share this small moment and laugh over popcorn.

If I am to be in a land that is not of my time, then I am glad to know a man with a similar fate. The house has not been kind to him, that I can see, yet he has the strength to look forward through its turmoil. He shares tea and food with me, and I'll remember him for the time that I am here, for this is no heaven or hell, but somewhere creeping in between, and I'm going to need all the help I can get.
